I was sent to a special needs boarding school when I was 10. Mainstream school wasn’t suitable as I had time off for hospital and also the teacher wasn’t making an effort to teach me anything because of my apparent lack of understanding.

Going to Valence School in Westerham, Kent didn’t in someways change me academically either, I was still in and out of hospital.

I remember reading through my school reports and copies for letters from the head teacher to DHSS (now Benefits Agency) a few years after leaving school that I was sub normal and wasn’t academically bright.

Being at a boarding school and only coming home every other weekend meant that I had no friends at home. I was constantly indoors.
